Sarah Thompson is Gorvins Legal Representative for the Cheshire Police Federation.
Sarah is a Senior Associate at the Stockport office. Sarah qualified in 1998 and therefore has years of experience in all matrimonial and family related cases.
In 2002, Sarah qualified as a lawyer mediator, and recently trained as a collaborative family lawyer. This means that Sarah is experienced in dealing with matters in a constructive, non-confrontational way. As such, Sarah is a member or Resolution, an organisation of over 5,000 lawyers and family justice professionals who believe in a non-confrontational approach to family law matters.
Not all cases can be settled through negotiation, and some have to be decided in court by a judge. Sarah is an experienced family court advocate and has appeared in courts throughout the country, representing police officers involved in all types of family proceedings.
Sarah has extensive experience advising on issues ranging from pre-nuptial agreements right through to divorce, division of marital assets, formal separations and breakdown of cohabitation. She is also experienced in children matters, in particular concerning issues of residence and contact.
Sarah is responsible for referrals from the Cheshire, Humberside, Staffordshire and West Mercia Police Federations. Sarah has a detailed knowledge of police pay and benefits, particularly dealing with the pension on divorce.
Sarah's recent work includes:
- Representing a client with complex financial assets, including properties abroad and business interests, and successfully negotiating a favourable settlement;
- Representing a high-ranking police officer with a substantial police pension, advising on an actuary's report in relation to the pension and successfully making detailed representations in court over the contents of the report;
- Advising a client with substantial financial assets in relation to the effect and validity of a pre-nuptial agreement;
- Advising a same-sex couple in relation to adoption;
- Representing a client in relation to the living arrangements of his children after separation and securing a shared care arrangement whereby the children spend an equal amount of time with each parent;
